As some of you may know, I coach the JV team for Holy Cross ice hockey. With exams going on this week we knew it was going to be a light turnout for practice*. Around 4 o'clock I received a phone call from the JV goalie stating that he wasn't making it to practice. Being that we only have 2 goalies in our organization we would have been left with a full ice practice and only one goalie. What was I to do?
As you've already read....you know what I did. I sucked it up by putting on the pads and I stunk it up on the ice. Alright, I didn't do THAT bad. Only one player had any type of success on me and he plays AAA hockey. But the one thing I did notice was how out of shape I'm in. My arms got heavy...my legs got tired...and my body was about 10 degrees warmer than usual. 8 years ago I would have been skating circles around these guys in my full goalie equipment and now I don't have the energy to get up after a save (of course, the rebound went into the corner).
The one thing I did have was fun...and at this point that's the name of the game. I was throwing out pokechecks just for the hell of it. Made a couple of two pad slides. And I would have even made Bernie Parent proud with a half assed skate save. Today I felt an itch to get back between the pipes...but for all I know it will be another year and a half before I put the mask on.
*We have one weekly practice ice slot per week that is shared between the JV and the Varsity.
